- Engine valve lifters, also called tappets, are a major part of a pushrod engine system. The engine valve lifter transfers the upward motion of the cam lobe to the pushrods and rocker arms. This opens the engine valves to allow air and exhaust in and out, and then closes them for combustion.
- Symptoms of wear or failure: The most obvious symptom is the noise it creates in your car's engine. You can usually distinguish the faulty lifter by the distinct sound. Instead of a knock or ping, a faulty hydraulic lifter will usually make a sound more reminiscent of a tapping sound.
