They slide inside of the factory rubber bump stops mounted on the tailgate and are then trimmed to the required length. We ship them longer than they need to be so you can trim them for a precise fit with your wheel offset and tire size. Their massive 1/2" wall thickness makes them very stiff so you can tighten the spare tire down against them without any deformation for a very tight and secure connection. Unlike other tailgate bump stop extensions on the market, these will work fine if you are not mounting your spare tire directly to the factory spare tire carrier because you need to use a spare tire relocation mount.
